The Devil Wears Prada

There’s been many things named the Devil Wears Prada – a movie, a novel, a rock band, and even a TV series. This article focuses on the movie starring Meryl Streep.
In 2003 everyone was reading the Devil Wears Prada. Hollywood decided to make a movie out of it. The reason so many novels are turned into movies is that they have a built in audience. It’s guaranteed that a % of the readers will see the movie no matter what. That’s called a base audience. That reduces the risk that a movie will lose money. Hollywood is all about money.
The film doesn’t follow the novel exactly. A lot of condensing has to go on to fit it into a 90 or 120 minute time slot. Concrete is the foundation of most buildings. But a building isn’t concrete. It’s generally steel and glass. Don’t be angry when the movie is not the same as the book.
The plot goes like this. A girl graduates then takes a job as assistant to a high powered fashion editor. She doesn’t fit in with the other people. She has to take on characteristics of the people she once disliked in order to keep the job. Our heroine saves a situation after a hated rival bombs. Her boss asks her to attend a Paris fashion show. While there she witnesses her boss ruthlessly destroy a coworker in order to save her own position.
Her eyes open to the fact that she’s becoming like her boss. She decides to leave the magazine in favor of a newspaper writing job. But she has earned the grudging respect of both her former boss and the coworker who once made fun of her. She learns about it when the ruthless magazine editor gives her a glowing reference.
The movie did well. Probably because of two things. The first is that built in novel audience. More than likely many former readers went out to see the movie. And it has a positive message. The moral is that a person should be true to themselves no matter the situation.
It’s worth the time to see or read the Devil Wears Prada.
